Every academic year we have more and more ambitious students wanting to test themselves, prove themselves, and become someone they're proud to be thanks to the sport of boxing.
Unfortunately, the British University and Colleges Sport (BUCS) Championship is our only chance to challenge other universities for titles and BUCS points, yet they take place in January. Only a couple of months from the start of term.
We do not have time to build your fitness from scratch or to build a substantial enough base to peak your physiological potential. It falls on you to make yourself ready.
This is especially true for first-timers - every new intake we have optimistic hopefuls telling us "how hard they're going to train". Myself and Fred have the same answer - "Don't tell me, show me".
Without a large base in place, it is unlikely you will be fit enough in January to box at BUCS. If you're returning, you are leaving most of your cards on the table by not taking the summer to get fitter than your competition.
This is the work that makes the difference: The quiet, consistent, high-volume work that's done when no one is watching. The work that they aren't doing. The work that completely changes you from a student-hopeful, to an ATHLETE.
What you need:
- To build a cardiovascular base to handle the demands of boxing
- To arrive ready to build your capacity from day 1
- To make the cell-level changes in your physiology that take months to build
- To recover session after session, and keep coming back better
- To already have a consistent training structure in place
This is a minimum effort programme.
At only 4 sessions per week, this should be the baseline of your training. All extra sessions you do are in addition to these ones. The programme is written to be as simple and minimal as possible while providing most of the gains we need for the upcoming year.
DO NOT SKIP THE LONG RUNS
They are perhaps the most important of them all. Skipping your running to go do bodybuilding at the gym is why you blow out in one round. You don't need to look capable - you need to BE capable.
